Lot Essay

John Frederick Herring, Jr., was the eldest of three sons to his namesake, John Frederick Herring, Sr., an important sporting and animal painter. Little is known about the younger’s training as an artist, but he was clearly influenced by his father in both style and subject, often leading to confusion over attribution. As a result, his father began adding the suffix ‘Senr’ to his signature. John Frederick Herring, Jr. exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1863 until 1873, and predominantly showed at the Society of British Artists on Suffolk Street, London from 1860 to 1875.
